Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s injected to produce cosmetic results. It has been safely used for years to treat medical conditions such as chronic migraines, muscle spasms, and involuntary muscle movements.
For people who want to smooth away wrinkles, Botox has been the top minimally invasive cosmetic treatment for nearly two decades. When Botox is injected, it blocks nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. As a result, the muscles relax and the wrinkles created by those muscles are significantly diminished or eliminated.
What facial wrinkles are treated with Botox?
As you get older, your face develops two types of wrinkles. Static wrinkles are caused by age-related changes, like the loss of collagen, thinning and dehydrated skin, and sun exposure. These wrinkles appear around your nose and mouth.
The second type, called dynamic wrinkles, develop as you repeatedly use the same muscles to make facial expressions. Since Botox relaxes muscles, it’s the perfect treatment for dynamic wrinkles, which include the deepest and most noticeable wrinkles on your face, like:
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Forehead furrows
Dr. Sedrak precisely targets a few muscles to eliminate wrinkles while leaving the remaining facial muscles unaffected. As a result, you still look natural after a Botox treatment.
What should I expect during a Botox treatment?
At your consultation, Dr. Sedrak reviews your medical history to make sure you don’t have any medical conditions that could cause problems during or after your Botox injection. Most people tolerate Botox well, but if you’re pregnant or have certain neurological diseases, you shouldn’t get the injections.
Dr. Sedrak uses an ultra-fine needle to inject a small amount of Botox, administering about 4-10 injections, depending on the areas being treated. After your injections, you may experience slight redness or swelling, but these side effects don’t last long. As soon as your treatment is over, you can resume your normal daily activities.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
You’ll see the results in 24-48 hours, which is the amount of time it takes for Botox to fully relax the muscles. Although your body gradually metabolizes the medication and the effect wears off, your results last up to four months.* You can get another Botox treatment as soon as your results fade.
If you’d like to schedule a Botox consultation to learn whether you’re a good candidate, call the Texas Skin Center location nearest you or book an appointment online.
